Defensive & Offensive Principles of Goalkeeping

Defensive Principles:

  • Decision Making: Soccer is a free flowing game, the goalkeeper is constantly forced to make decision based on keeping the ball out of the net!

  • Pressure: Ability of the goalkeeper to deny penetration by organizing the defense.The support of the GK to the defense should condense the field and should make the play more predictable for teammates.

  • Cover: Ability to provide defensive support for the pressuring defending player.Positioning by the GK is based upon - pressuring of 1st defender or 2nd and 3rd defenders positioning, or location of which 3rd of the field.

  • Presence: The ability of GK to demonstrate "presence" in and around the penalty area. Presence is displayed by positioning, communication, decision making and organization. GK Presence give defense confidence.

  • Compactness: Width and Length - ability of GK to deny opponent space by organizing the defensive unit. This movement is determine by movement of the ball, attacking players and offside space.

  • Support: GK to "ebb and flow" with the defensive unit by staying connected to them. GK has to manage the space between him/her and the last defender.

  • Mobility: The ability of GK to control the 6 yard box and the penalty area .

Offensive Principles:

  • Penetration: The ability for GK to recognize that the counterattack is on.

  • Good decision making on distribution is the main key for a GK on offensive  principles, His/her team has to keeps possession of the ball on as many distributions as possible.

Goalkeepers are the last line of defense.

They should think like sweeper backs and use the full range of the defensive third of the field.

Goalkeepers are the first line of attack.

Quality distribution is vital for counter-attacking. Keepers must possess a wide range of distribution skills in the area of kicking and throwing.
